Thirsty Thursday: Brunch Menu + Wine Pairings
It’s really amazing how the right wine/food pairing can make a whole meal taste better. I’ll admit most of the time I stick with wines I like, like Sauvingon Blanc & mild red table wine. I like what I like but I also really like learning about new wines & why they pair well with different foods.
This is the first (of hopefully many) Thirsty Thursday posts here on Heather O Made that I'll be teaming up with Bottle Rush* to bring you a menu (of recipes) you can make at home & wines you can serve. Tamara Lover of Bottle Rush will provide the brain power behind knowing which wines will work best. Tamara is a sommelier (read: she went to grad school for wine & yes you can do that!). She knows her stuff.
This week I chose a brunch menu because I think it’s such a fun meal to invite friends over to have & if the weather permits to sit outside & soak up the sun in the meantime.

Boston Cream Crepe Cake
The boston cream crepe cake that I made to celebrate HeatherOMade’s second birthday proved to be a definite labor of love. This translates to “thank goodness it tasted good because I’m not sure I’m going ever take the time to make this again.”
While the ingredients are simple: eggs, flour, milk, etc the time & skill it takes are not. If I were to make this again I’d probably use my old faithful crepe recipe instead of the one I found via Will Cook For Smiles, simply because I’m more comfortable with it & I have a better handle on how they cook. This new-to-me-recipe was challenging to say the least & I had to scrape & scrap more crepes that I would’ve liked to (don’t worry there’s a photo of the crepe graveyard). But hey it was a new life lesson. Once I had all of the components ready (crepes, custard & chocolate ganache) the assembling of the cake was fun & therapeutic finish to the whole experience. Although my cake wasn’t as high as I aspired it to be it was still delicious & didn’t last a day at the office when I brought it into share.

Tomato, Cheese & Egg Crêpe Squares
I love finding inspiration from fellow bloggers, mostly because I like to think they're just like me, a real person who probably lives, eats, dresses & sleeps in an apartment. I've had the pleasure of meeting the creative mind behind Downtown Romantic in the past through my friend Christine. Although I haven't seen Laney in quite some time I enjoy checking in on her blog & chic lifestyle every now & then. Besides her luxe taste in clothes, the girl knows how to eat & everything seems so decadent. So this past weekend I tried my hand at the crepes recipe on her blog with my own twist with some spicy sriracha salt my sister-in-law gifted me for Christmas.
Click through for my version of Downtown Romantic's crepe squares recipe & photos of how I did it.
