Better Home Cooking Basics #53: Freeze Soups & Sauces in Large Food Storage Bags & Stack to Save Space.

My freezer is packed to the max, with what I’m not certain but I do know that every inch is coveted. In hopes to save space I freeze soups & tomato sauce in large freezer bags. Then I lay them flat so that they are stackable & save space. Then when you want to defrost the contents you can defrost all of it in the bag or break off a small ‘piece’ if that’s all you need.

Better Home Cooking Basics: #34 Store Corn on the Cob in the Fridge with Husks Intact

When I was a kid, one of my jobs this time of year was husking the corn. My mom always came home with big bags of corn on the cob - husks on.  When I see people doing this (husking that is) in the super market it's still so foreign to me - shouldn't they be doing that at home? The answer is yes.  Sure you can sneak a peek in the super market to see if the corn looks good by pulling a bit of the husk back to check for tight rows of plump kernels - but don't tear that husk off. Instead fold it back in place.  Fight the urge to leave the messy husks & silks at the store & bring your corn on the cob home with their husks intact.  Store them in your fridge with the husks on until ready to use. The husks will help preserve the freshness of the corn. Fresher food or in this case corn will make for better meals.
