Fusilli with Fresh Tomato Sauce & Ricotta Cheese

After college I moved to NYC to “grow up,” which means I worked three jobs in attempts to make rent & pay off student loans while having some fun too. Glamorous, right? One of my three jobs was waiting tables  in NYC’s Little Italy. During this time I survived on a few staples for dinner: cannolis, pasta dishes my boss would generously share with me & Chinese food from my favorite place a block away.

I really hadn't thought about these meals until I was watching Giada’s show on Food Network yesterday. She was in Italy making all kinds of pasta. The one dish that she made took me way back to my early twenties when I used to share fusilli (the long curly pasta) with tomato sauce & fresh ricotta with my boss. I easily ate this once or twice (maybe more) a week. Giada’s method was simple & straight forward so feeling nostalgic for it I recreated it from memory of what I learned earlier in the day.

The one key method for making Giada's simple & super fresh tomato sauce sung out to my inner love of tomatoes - especially fresh summer tomatoes. She took fresh tomatoes & used a box grater to break them down for the sauce. Apparently if you do this in a fancy food processor or blender the heat from those kinds of appliances actually change the flavor of the tomatoes (& we don't want that). I had to try it. I did & I loved it. This maybe my new favorite way to make tomato sauce. It’s so easy & fresh that you’ll be making on the regular too. I think it’s time to get this dish back in my weekly rotation like when I first moved to NYC.

Do you have specific food that reminds you of your first “adult” years? I’d love to hear about them. Leave me a note in the comments below.

PS: remember if you make this pasta be sure to snap a pic & then tag me in your photos on instagram (@mrshoh or #HeatherOMade)!

New Spring 'Do

spring haircut. textured bob. bangs

Spring started last week (you wouldn’t know it by the weather today & the weather predicted for tomorrow in the North East) so I celebrated with a new ‘do. My sister & I went to Arrojo NYC for their 2-for-1 haircut deal (call for details: 212.242.7786) yesterday. I love my new ‘do a la John Shannon (go to him - he’s awesome!). Most obvious, I got bangs (yes - they’re back) & chopped a few inches. Here’s how it looks styled two ways - (left) straight & neat & (right) wavy & messy. Which do you like best, comment below!

How are you celebrating spring?

Shoes for Dinner

photo from: http://shootandfly.tumblr.com/
There's a reason city gals use their ovens as extra closet space.  It's not because they can't cook. It's not because they don't cook.  It's because the effort it takes to get to the actual cooking is exhausting.

The past couple of weeks have been challenging.  Albeit we are blessed to have this roof over our head, heat, electricity & running water.  I've lived in Hoboken with Chris for a couple years.  Hoboken is a mere three miles from NYC but there are some differences like grocery shopping that makes you feel like you're in the suburbs, except it's not.

Being away from home (& my kitchen) makes me realize how when you live in NYC it's far easier to use your oven for accessories (no I never did this but I think I could get there) & head to the many eateries in New York or simply to order take-out.

For all of those who have never lived in NYC or have never lived in an place without a car I'm going to explain why the fact that I cook almost every night (in Hoboken) is a phenomenon to my girlfriends who still live on the island (aka: Manhattan).  The day starts like this: you scamper off to work chugging down a coffee in transit; get through the work day which ends probably around 7pm (or later) & then head home, hungry.  On your subway commute home you think of what you want to eat for dinner.  You have condiments in your fridge (& maybe shoes in your oven).  You promised yourself you'd eat healthfully this week to make up for the hurricane partying you did last week with booze & take-out.  Hungry & tired you drag yourself to the grocery store down the street. You opt for the shopping basket, not the cart because you're going to be carrying this home (& they won't let you take the cart with you.) You mill around the fish & poultry section, kind of grossed out wondering how long those fillets have been there(??) & where did all the organic chicken go(???). The second lap around the store (basket still empty) you grab some "all natural" chicken sausage, a bag of spinach and a roll of cookie dough (obviously).  Twenty-five minutes later (if checkout actually went smoothly), you're back on the sidewalk trekking home carrying a purse way too big for any human plus your new found grocery items.  You make a creative dinner with the findings at the grocery store & what was left in the cabinets & before you know it, it's 8:30pm & it's time to make those cookies.

The next day around 7pm, you're wondering what you should get at the grocery store & start the process all over, or you just order pizza or grab dinner out with friends.

The moral of this babble is: city living is tough. You can't really stock up at the grocery store because you have no car but what you can do is order groceries from fresh direct, ahh & then I remember that's how my sister does it ;) Or you can eat at some of the yummiest places on earth. Ok so it's not so bad ;)

What's for dinner tonight at your house?

Fall 2012 Hair Change: Shorter & Choppier

The seasons seemed to have changed over night.  Friday was summer & Sunday was full-fledged fall.  Things in life constantly change, most without any control.  Between life & the seasons changing I felt the need for a change that I could control - my hair! (If you follow me on instagram or twitter you already knew that.)  I was ready for something new, so I went to my faithful hair whisperer, Heather Olexa, at Alibi 25.  I can always trust Heather for the hair makeover I need.  Her resume has graced the pages of glossy magazines to the runways of NYC & Milan.  I'm always in good hands with this spicy little stylist.

A little over an hour with Heather & I felt like a new person.  I left the salon feeling a little lighter (about 6 inches of hair lighter) with a bit more bounce in my step.

Thanks Heather!!!

Do you change your hair with each season? If so, what style are you sporting this fall?
